Memo Introduces Clay Sculpturing to Cavalier Students
Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

For the mosaic tile artwork currently displayed in the Cavalier School's entrance hall, Memo had students work together in groups to design mosaic tile wall displays that had in their "artist" eyes a particular theme. Students learned about color, composition, design and artistic creativity.

In another project, Memo incorporated the "Animals: Them and Us" theme, to teach students how to sculpture animal pieces using a special type of clay. The pieces were then bisque fired in a kiln. Some students painted their bisque animal pieces with tempera paint while others painted their pieces with a special glaze to undergo a second firing using a process called raku.

Memo is a sculptor and ceramicist from Lima, Peru, South America. Among his many interests is the work of the Mochica culture, a pre-Incan civilization known especially for its pottery. He is currently working with the North Dakota Museum of Art in Grand Forks, ND. The workshop was made possible by the Cavalier Arts and Crafts Society, North Dakota Museum of Art and North Dakota Council on the Arts.
